How much would it cost to...?

how much would it cost to paint a 4 door subaru... black with silver spiderweb pattern, change 2.2 liter head gaskets, right front axel, struts, timing belt, water pump, and change interior fabric color. How much would it cost to...?
depends on what color your vehicle is now... it it's a different color the paint will cost you upwards of $5,000 alone without the spiderweb... head gaskets you may as well do yourself because there is only one and it won't take but 2 hours or so and costs only $8.00 or so... timing belt will take 5 minutes and cost you $20.00... interior upholstery will spike the price, especially if you want leather... leather can cost you around $250.00 per captain chair... a bench seat would be more along the lines of $500... axles struts and water pumps all depend on how hard they are to get out... the more time you pay someone to try and get these items out the more money you are putting in their pocket... what you are talking about doing isn't cheap in the least... I would suggest sticking with whatever color the car already is, then do the spiderweb pattern on top of that... that'll take $3,000 off this project real fast...How much would it cost to...?
roughly 8500 to 12000 pending on paintHow much would it cost to...?
Earl Scheib will do the car the black for about $200. The spiderweb design you will need to price out but I would guess around a grand. The head gasket should be, for parts and labor, about $400 or so. The axle, about $300. Struts, will run approximately $200 plus. The water pump will run between $40 and $100, depending on what quality and warranty you want. Labor should be about 3 or 4 hours. So, about $300. You can buy a spray paint to change the interior color. It runs about $10 a can I believe. You'll probably want 3 or 4 cans.

Here's some links for the upholstery paint:

  • Can someone give me an idea on how much it would cost to get my rear struts replaced.?

And also, if I don't get them changed, is there any risk of more damage being done. I don't mind the rattling noise and bumpy ride, etc., but if driving with really bad struts will damage other parts I guess I will need to fix them

I have a 2000 mercury cougar. Can someone give me an idea on how much it would cost to get my rear struts replaced.?
Generally about 1 hour per wheel. Mechanics usually give you life time warranty on strut and install cheap crap strut so that it will fail within 10K miles. in which case, the mechanic can eat the cost of cheap strut, but charge for labor to get repeated business. Good strut would last 100K

The problem with riding on old strut is when road is bumpy, the time that the wheels making contact with the ground would be severely limited. Which means your braking distance and stopping distance would increase. It increases your chance of getting into an accident. Can someone give me an idea on how much it would cost to get my rear struts replaced.?
Too bad mister Sang K has'nt been able to find a reputable mechanic, I feel sorry for him, seems a little insecure of him to tell someone that mechanics are all theives, kind of like getting a bad apple and saying that the entire orchard is bad is'nt it ?.

Price to change rear suspension back to conventional setup from air-ride in 86 Dodge Aries?

My Ma bought a used 86 Dodge Aries that was tricked out in the back with an air-ride suspension that doesn't work. It has a tire style air valve sticking up from the middle of the rear bumper to add or remove air to adjust the ride characteristic but it leaks air from someplace and so the rear end is really flat and can sometimes thud over bad sections of roads. If she had it changed back to whatever the car came with stock, how much would that be and what would be the replacement components? This is a Dodge Aries we're talking about here so I know its not going to have a whole lot of advanced stuff like MacPherson struts and double wishbones like certain other cars.Price to change rear suspension back to conventional setup from air-ride in 86 Dodge Aries?
if you could even find all the needed parts to do this with it would cost you around 400 bucks maybe more,im not sure what all they did to it to make it like it is,but parts for that car aren't easy to come by,you might find some on this sight for a stock suspension on one of those cars,i junked an 87 model down last year and sent it to the crusher, that's what has happened to a lot of those cars.good luck ,http://partstrain.com

Should I get a degree in automotive technology?

Right now im a senior in high school and I have taken all the auto classes offered at my school. Through that I have learned the basics of how a car works, I have also learned how to change brakes, oil, how to remove a strut, and how to put a tire onto a rim. But I just don't know if thats something I want to do for the rest of my life because I haven't got that much experince form school. Also I have heard that being a mechanic can be very difficult and is very hard on your body. So im just wondering if this is a career i should be pursing? Should I get a degree in automotive technology?
If you are passionate about it then go for it. If you are unsure and want to look around you can use websites that will help you find other careers that would also work for you. You could also talk to your school counselor to get the same information.

You could also take a few different classes you think you might be interested in at a local community college. Career options are pretty much endless.

Question about the price of new struts for a chevy lumina?

i'm a girl and i don't know much about cars, i have a 1997/98 chevy lumina that needs new struts/shocks, and i was wondering if anybody knows what they cost? i really don't know anything about vehicles except driving them and what not, any help is very appreciated and thank you for answering, i live in chippewa falls wisconsin if that helps any, oh and how hard is it to change them/put new ones on?

thank you so much.Question about the price of new struts for a chevy lumina?
As far as the price of them goes, it would be best to call your local part store to get accurate pricing for parts in your area. Also, the price will vary greatly depending on the quality of the parts. As for the difficulty of the job, the rear shocks are simple to change. There will be one bolt at the bottom end of the shock, and a nut on a stud at the top end of it which you will have to get in the trunk and pull the carpet back to find. The front struts are much more difficult. The front struts have the spring and strut as a complete assembly, and to change the strut you have to remove the spring from the old one and install it on the new one before you put it back in the car.If you don't have the correct tools or the experience, or at least the knowledge of how to do it properly, it can be very dangerous. I do NOT recommend attempting to change the struts yourself you said yourself that you don't know much about cars. Leave the struts to the professionals, because saving a little money isn't worth getting injured over, and it shouldn't cost very much in labor to have them installed. The other alternative is to spend a lot of extra money to buy the struts that come with the spring already installed on them. If you buy those, then changing the complete assembly is quite simple. First jack up the front end and remove the wheel. At the bottom of the strut there are 2 large bolts that go through it, one is right above the other. Those 2 bolts hold the strut to the spindle. Remove those 2 bolts. Then go ahead and open your hood. Under your hood you will find at the top of the strut three studs sticking up in a little triangle pattern with nuts on them. You remove those 3 nuts and that will loosen the strut from the body of the car. Now you should be able to slide the strut out of place. Then you just install the new one the way the old one came out. Once again, I can not express enough how much I recommend allowing a professional to do the struts.

Oh, as a side note, I recently priced struts for my Oldsmobile Cutlass, and they varied in price from $43 each, all the way up to $169 each depending on the brand, quality, and warranty. The complete assemblies with the spring already installed were over $400 each. Luckily I work in a shop with a strut spring compressor, so I don't have to try to use the cheap little do-it-yourself spring compressor tool, which itself can be dangerous if you don't put it on the strut right. As for the shocks, you can usually get pretty decent ones for around $20 each.

How much does it cost to replace struts/shocks?

I have a 2002 Mazda Protege. I live in a metropolitan area. I just don't want to get ripped off. I have a squeaking rattling nosie and all the classic symptoms, pulling while breaking, feeling of movement when changing lanes on a highway. I mostly drive in the city with some trips all on highways, straight, etc. Thanks. How much does it cost to replace struts/shocks?
That could be more then just struts from what you describe. To answer your question though, you can figure between $60-$80 dollars for each wheel for the struts. Then about half that more for the strut mount, which should also be replaced but most people don't do that even though it's good practice. Then figure 1hr flat rate per wheel. Many places offer deals where they do the whole job for a fixed price when you have all the wheels done at the same time. Check around for those. Like Sears or some places like that.

Flat rate in these parts is $80/hr.

That should give you a ball park figure. How much does it cost to replace struts/shocks?

You can obtain a code reader from a local parts store or tool sales outlet, usually for under $100 depending on your location. The vehicle shouldn't set any codes unless you tamper with electrical systems. A positive way to prevent this is to disconnect the negative battery cable, always negative first or you may set the antitheft on the vehicle.

How hard to install struts on a 2000 dodge grand caravan?

I have changed shocks on older cars and found the process straight forward, but I've never done struts. Do I have to remove anything other that the wheel/tire to do the job? Do I need any special tools? Does anyone know of a step-by-step on the web? Thanks! How hard to install struts on a 2000 dodge grand caravan?
I'd get someone at a shop to do it.They have a strut spring compressor that is safer than the one you would probably use. Also they have impact wrenches which makes getting the big nut off the top alot easier because if you do it by hand the strut tube in the center is gonna turn with the nut and not come off. But if you really want to do it yourself here it goes

    1. Put car up on jackstand supporting it by the frame. Not the control arms.

    2.Remove tires.

    3. Remove any wires or cables from the strut. They sometimes have guide holes or clamps attached to it holding brake lines And AbS wires from hanging loose.

    3. Mark where the strut is attached by the two bolts that bolt it to the steering knuckle. This is done to attempt to get every thing straight or close to where it was so you don't throw the camber out for your alignment.

    4. Put a jack under the lower control arm, and put the control arm under a little pressure. This will keep everthing from falling when you take out the 2 bolts from the Bottom of the strut, and the top nuts off of the top of the strut tower under the hood.

5.Remove the bolts from the bottom. You'll need 2 wrenches. One for oneside of the bolt. and one for the nut on the otherside.

6.Remove the nuts from the top. Then lower the jack slowly.

    7. Remove strut.

    8. Use a strut spring comressor the compress the strut spring.

9.Once compressed enough. This is the hard part with out an Impact wrench.

loosen the Big nut on the top. You'll have to figure out a way to keep the tube from turning with the nut .

10.After you get the big nut off. Slowly and I mean slowly unclamp the strut spring clamps. If your not dead yet.

11.Replace the strut. Line the spring up correctly In the craddle of the new strut and make sure the rubber spacers that the spring sits in are in.

12.Then just reverse the procedure. Make sure the bottom of the strut lines up with the marks you made. You might want to have a Chilton's or Haynes manual handy for a reference.

Repeat this whole procedure for the other side. How hard to install struts on a 2000 dodge grand caravan?
There is considerably more to it than just removing a wheel and a nut or two, not to mention you'll need an alignment once it is done unless you have a bubble level. Also, without a spring compressor you stand the chance of taking your head off once you remove the strut tower nut. Leave it to a professional with the right equiptment. How hard to install struts on a 2000 dodge grand caravan?
If you do not have a strut compressor do not attempt. If you remove the top nut the full force of the spring will let loose and you will get hurt. This is a job for the professional with the right equipment. How hard to install struts on a 2000 dodge grand caravan?

Make sure you have money in your wallet or a credit card. Take the car to a repair shop. Call for a ride. Later go pick up the car/van. Enjoy !!!

OK, my point is that this is nothing like changing shocks. You have to compress the spring that is on the strut. You can't do that at home because you need special tools for that. If you can find a shop that will do tha part for you, then you can do the rest of the work on your own.

First buy the struts, second mark each of the... never-mind this is something you will probably mess up on if you have never seen anybody do it before. Have a repair shop do it. Good Luck! How hard to install struts on a 2000 dodge grand caravan?
Yes you need a spring compressor.. its best to have someone at least install the springs onto the struts... It can be dangerous !!! These vehicle also have a tendency to rust out the tops of the crowns where the struts mount... These must be repaired properly or you'll have your strut coming out the hood !!! and possibly loose control when it happens... Chrysler should be forced to repair these vehicles at no charge to the owners!!!How hard to install struts on a 2000 dodge grand caravan?
The book calls for about 4.2 hours to replace the front struts on this vehicle. You will need a set of spring compressors to keep the springs compressed while you have the strut off the vehicle. You should be able to buy a maintance book (haynes, or chiltons) at your local auto parts store and it will describe everything step be step for you.How hard to install struts on a 2000 dodge grand caravan?
Compared to the cars you have worked on before, yes, it is hard and, yes, you need special tools. When you buy the new struts, there are instructions that come with. By the way, if you try and back-yard mechanic the job with home made tools, there is a good chance you will be seriously hurt

1986 Honda CRX with blown head gasket. Help?

I was driving my CRX when she died on me. I got her to start again later, but ran extremely rough. After checking most things i found Oil in my coolant (radiator %26amp; Overflow) No coolant in my oil though. Automatically i'm thinking head gasket. I've worked on cars b4 doing small things (oil changes, plugs, wires, rotors, brakes, struts, water pump) How hard is it to do a head Gasket on 1986 CRX? Has anyone ever done one? Shes a cool little go kart of a car and does great on gas. Any advice/direction or comments would be appreciated. Thanks.1986 Honda CRX with blown head gasket. Help?

wow an '86 honda crx? I know that its honda and all but even honda will eventually breakdown especially after 22 years.. just get a slightly newer car.1986 Honda CRX with blown head gasket. Help?
The head gasket replacement is not a hard job, BUT it is not a job for a novice either.

Buy a Chilton service manual. (The pro book is a better buy, Even if it is over 50.00) The 14.00 book tends to leave some blanks that I don't like.

If you have done a water pump, then I think you will be able to handle a 4 cyl. head gasket, just follow the procedure in the manual and be sure to buy new bolts or studs before you torque the head back on.

(You may want to get the head checked for warp or small cracks) It is CHEAP INSURANCE!!!

BTW, I disagree with the posts that say you need a %26quot;newer car%26quot; The CRX is a great little car.1986 Honda CRX with blown head gasket. Help?
buy new car, head gasket is a garage job, needs skimming level to gurantee a new gasket kit would fix the problem of blwon original gasket. also the head may be cracked and a new or recon head would be pricy send her to the scarp yard in the sky.

How do I reduce fishtailing in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) car - besides easing out on the pedal?

Last night I was driving and I didn't even accelerate very much out of the curve. The pavement was dry but my car started fishtailing very violently. It was almost impossible to regain control (at least for me). Do you guys/girls know of any mechanical or structural modifications to reduce fishtailing? I think I've heard of rear-end strut bars or something like that. Maybe a suspension re-tuning? And also where can I get those changes done and for what price ranges? Any tips to correct fishtailing when it happens? How do I reduce fishtailing in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) car - besides easing out on the pedal?
Ease out on the pedal. Unless you're driving a pickup, and you're fishtailing on DRY asphalt, you're either losing traction (maybe there's gravel on the road), or you're lead-footing it.

Putting more weight in the trunk would help a bit. Also, check the tread on your tires. You might consider getting something a bit grippier, too.

Mainly though, learn to control your right foot. How do I reduce fishtailing in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) car - besides easing out on the pedal?
    Oh, is it a Miata?

I crashed my Miata recently. It was the opposite, though. I lost traction in front (hit a patch of gravel going too fast for that...would have been fine going slower, turning earlier, or not hitting the gravel...2/3 my fault) and slid into a curb. Car is dead. :(

fishtailing sounds mean. fish are people too. shame on you. how would you like to be tailed? How do I reduce fishtailing in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) car - besides easing out on the pedal?
if you are driving a truck, just add a little weight by adding a little bit of wood or anything that has any weight to it. If you are driving a car check for wear on the tires and if you hear a crunching noise as you go around corners you have bad struts. How do I reduce fishtailing in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) car - besides easing out on the pedal?
You need to put weight in the back to stop/reduce the fishtailing. Try putting some sandbags in your trunk. You have to remember with rear wheel drive the back tires move and push the front. So if there isn't enough weight in the back you are going to just spin or fishtail until the tires can catch. How do I reduce fishtailing in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) car - besides easing out on the pedal?
JUST PUT SOMETHING HEAVY IN THE TRUNK. LIKE A FEW CINDER BLOCKS OR A BAG OF SAND OR A BIG BAG OF CAT LITTER. IT IMPROVES THE TRACTION AND IS INEXPENSIVE TO DO. IN WINTER THE SAND OR CAT LITTER CAN HELP YOU IF YOU GET STUCK OR ARE ON ICE,How do I reduce fishtailing in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) car - besides easing out on the pedal?
Kicking the *** end of the car out is a blast you just have to learn how to control it. Its all about the throttle and the counter steer. If you can fiqure out the right combination then you will master the drift and have a blast in the winter conditions that to often strand the average motorist. Have fun and dont hit anybody practice in a open parking lot first. Remember to have fun.How do I reduce fishtailing in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) car - besides easing out on the pedal?
This is an old problem for vehicles that have lighter than average rear ends.

The FIX is to increase the weight. A cheap way to do this is to put a bag or two of sand or cement in the trunk. This should reduce or eliminate your fishtailing.

If you do fishtail, layoff the gas and always turn the wheel into the direction of the skid. However, the increase in weight should stop the fishtailing. Fishtailing is more common in pickup trucks without weight in the bed.How do I reduce fishtailing in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) car - besides easing out on the pedal?
In racing, it's called %26quot;Being loose.%26quot; It happened in your case, when your tires lost traction and were going considerably faster than your car. Generally, in a stock (street legal) car, such as an old camero, we'd load up the rear fender wells with lead or cast iron weights ( old counter weights for an old style house window).

You see it alot in the Northern states when it snows. Driving pick-up trucks can be REALLY interesting -- no wieght in the rear end. We'd load up the bed with kitty liter. Great weight and comes in handy when you need to put something down under the tires for traction.

try putting some weight in the rear, maybe some sandbags in the trunk. How do I reduce fishtailing in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) car - besides easing out on the pedal?
In cold climates tires harden-up unless your using HP. tires that wear out in 24,000 miles. If your car has a rear anti - sway or roll bar unhook one of the end links during the winter. The rear end will roll a bit more but the extreme pressure transferred to the outside radius wheel will be gone! The purpose of the anti roll bar when its attached in the standard position flattens cornering. In doing so it actually reduces traction of the inside radius tire while cornering REDUCING traction of that wheel / tire. A small bar works great but newer aggressive stiff suspensions can over-steer and swat you in the noggin at an unexpected moment while cornering. You may want to drop the air pressure in your rear tires a couple of pounds to see if that helps first. How do I reduce fishtailing in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) car - besides easing out on the pedal?

I haven't a clue as to how much something like this costs. $800 is what my dealership quoted me on after I brought my car in for an oil change - of course they always find more than what you originally bring your car in for!Is $800 too much to pay for replacing rear struts on a 2001 Honda Civic sedan?
Ask why they need replaced. Unless you are having tire wear, handling or ride issues I'd leave them on. They may be worn, but I personally don't replace struts till they start to cause problems. BE SURE THEY ARE NOT CAUSING PROBLEMS,any broken components could make your car unsafe. if your answer is they are just worn out,or it's the recommended mileage for replacement, leave them alone save the money. $800 is probably average for a dealer to replace them, if you find a local shop you trust they may save some money. Is $800 too much to pay for replacing rear struts on a 2001 Honda Civic sedan?
I am going against most of my mechanic will-power here. Yes, we (mechanics) almost all check your car for additional needs, that's how we make our living and keep your car going. However when it comes to rear struts I would say don't change them without a good reason. The best reasons to change them being: it affects ride quality of the car and YOU (being the driver) can't stand the way it rides anymore. There is a strut noise that again YOU (being the driver) can't stand anymore. The absolute most important reason to change them is if it were a safety issue. Which means if there were the possibility the strut were to come apart and cause further damage and injury. Unlikely it is the last one, anything is possible. Now that being said you can ask your dealer why are you telling me I need rear struts? When they give their answer reply (unless included in the answer they give you) with and what could be the possibilities if I don't replace them? Good luck.Is $800 too much to pay for replacing rear struts on a 2001 Honda Civic sedan?
If they just started leaking then you have time to call around and get other quotes, dealers will quote using oem parts and there are allot of after market struts available. I'm sure you can find a shop that doesn't charge $75.00 per hour labor charge like your dealer does. Shop around and save your self tons of money. I would bet that if you got the strut part numbers from your dealer parts department you could find the same thing online for half the money too, then just pay the mechanic labor time, should be about 1 1/2 hours labor, slightly more if there is allot of rust.Is $800 too much to pay for replacing rear struts on a 2001 Honda Civic sedan?
Sure. Everything wears out and they are there to try to keep the car operating like new so they always want to replace the worn parts. But $800 is double the normal cost at an independent garage. Not really, but be sure to use only genuine Honda parts. If the strut cartridge is bad, it will show signs of leaking fluid. Some of them are gas-charged. You may be able to negotiate the price down, or buy the parts, and have a mechanic shop install these parts for less. HOw much would it cost to fix CV joint and struts?

HI I have a 91 Cavalier Z24 and need to get a new CV joint on right side and new struts....just wondering about how much that would cost. I do live in Canada so I dont know if that will change the price at all.HOw much would it cost to fix CV joint and struts?
CV joint would roughly be about 150 to 215, all depends on brand they use, but they just replace the whole thing.

Struts would roughly be about 45 to 60 per corner. Again all depends on quality and type they use.

They will probably do a wheel alignment also an inspection.

So let's say, 50 per corner, and 175 for CV, so 375 for parts, if no other parts are needed.

It would take about 20 min to 40 min per conrder for the struts, and about 45 min to 1.5 hr for the CV Joint, all depends if any complications happen, bolts snaps, blah blah.

I dont know what the average going rate is per shop, but I've seen them range from 65 to 125 per hour.

So let's say they are 85 per hour, so 160 for the struts for the labour, and another hour for the strut, so you are looking at 245 for labour.

    Parts 375 + Labour 245 = 620.00 + applicable taxes and waste charges.

Remember this is just estimates I am pulling out of the air and so I dont know where in Canada, and how much different mechanics costs.HOw much would it cost to fix CV joint and struts?
Here in Detroit that would run you $400.00 to $600.00 depending on whether any additional parts like strut mounts or CV boots need to be replaced as well.HOw much would it cost to fix CV joint and struts?
$550 total, but I'm not sure that includes a wheel realignment if needed which is sixty dollars more. Make sure to have the upper strut isolator bearings replaced at the same time.

There is a weird sound in the car i think its the axel.?

ok well i bought this car and 5 days later i hear this sound when im driving from the front on both sides. its like a vvvvvvvv sound especially when i turn right or left and when i step on the peddle it does it to it goes vvvvvv lol i need help i do know tha my struts need to be changed int the back . thats all its a sunfire. please dont put comment about how you dont like sunfires. There is a weird sound in the car i think its the axel.?
ehhhhhhhh, possiblly universal joint in one of your axels, ehhhh your discription of the noise was too general although i dono how one might describe a noise with words =), don't think its your struts. could also be a wheel bearing.

does it happen when turning left and right or just left? There is a weird sound in the car i think its the axel.?
This really sounds like a bad wheel bearing. The tipoff is that it gets worse when turning left or right. You could try to determine which side the noise is coming from by raising and supporting the front wheels, then try moving the wheels up and down and left and right and check for any looseness or play. Most of the time a bad wheel bearing will also be loose. hope this helps.

Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?

Hi there. I live in Connecticut, am still driving a 98 Cavalier (yes, the luxury, I know) and would love to continue doing so for as long as possible; it's a great little car; no frills, reliable, long paid off, but needs some routine care due to its age.

I'm at 125K miles, and obviously need to replace the rear struts. Last time I had it in for an oil change my mechanic told me %26quot;it's time%26quot;. I'm sure all four could use replacing, but the rear ones are in the most critical shape.

Just wondering if anyone has any idea how much this is going to cost me? I could just ask my mechanic, and of course he'll give me an estimate before he does any work. I'm just curious.

Thanks!Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
Gabirel Ultras run $44 a piece for the rear from Autozone. The fronts run the same. They are generally better than OEM with a lifetime warranty. I'd suggest you do all four at the same time if at all possible, as you'll need an alignment as well, and all four likely need to be replaced. There are safety and tire wear issues to be considered here, and you should have your entire suspension carefully inspected.

I suggest you call your local Autozone and ask them who they might recommend in your area that uses their parts, and you might not get killed too badly on the repair. I recently did this for my Mom's Ford Contour (same repair - 4 struts), saved many hundreds of $$$, and found a decent/close local mechanic in the process. Autozone also has a shop locator service as part of their Web site and you can start there if you prefer.

The MSRP on one rear strut for a 98 Cavalier from Chevrolet is $159. Add in labor and service costs, and the car isn't worth much more to that same dealer. They would love to have your money, however.

Good luck.Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
Well it is going to vary on the strut you chose to put in. If you put in factory OEM parts, which I suggest on this car, you are looking at about $425 for the strut and install. The reason I suggest OEM is look how far they have made it now. Aftermarket parts may be cheaper but you get what you pay for on this car.Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
i got an estanite of 600 to 800 for all four and sold the car rather than put that much $ into it.Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
well id say 60 per strut at 2 labor hrs at 65 an hr is 250. Id ask if he could do all around for 350.Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
Your looking at $300 around about...

The struts themselves are $150....Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
Out here in the west, It costs on average $75.00 per corner. But be advised that whether you change 1 or all 4 you will have to have a new alignment done. This is due to your car being 4 wheel alineable. About another $50.Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
Probably over 200 plus parts.Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
You should be looking at about $400 for everything.

btw, if he says the struts are $60, tell him you want better ones.

If you replace them with quality parts, you'll never have to buy struts again for this car. They will outlast the car.

Note: the labor cost is the same whether you put on cheap parts or quality parts.Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
If you're going to replace the struts why don't you just go ahead and get a lowering kit and slam that ride! Seriously, pimp that car out!Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?

How can i reflect changes in my .java files when using struts with JBOSS as the server?

i am making a .WAR deployer....n wanna change just a few files in it. is there a way where these java files can be replaced in the .war without requiring to restart JBOSS??How can i reflect changes in my .java files when using struts with JBOSS as the server?
No. JBoss loads the whole WAR into memory and doesn't get notified if it changes on disk.

  • Did GoodYear break my strut on car?

Last week I took my car in for a oil change to Good Year because I had a $20 off coupon. I had a feeling the cashier was irked about me giving him the coupon for some reason. Well after my oil change, I drive away and theres this very noticable clanking noise on my rear passenger tire. I took it back and told them, and they said I had a broken strut. I never heard any noise AT ALL from it before and told them that, they said thats how struts work. once you raise the car and then lower it, something happens and then you hear the clanking noise. is this info correct? i found it funny how I never heard ANYTHING at all from the tire before I took it there but now the noise is quite loud when I drive especially over bumps. my buddy told me its very difficult to break a strut and i really do not know how i could have broke it driving. i've been having this thought inside me that the Good Year people broke my strut either on accident, or on purpose to 'get back' at someone trying to save a few bucks to make him pay a pretty penny to get this fixed. what do you guys think? and theres really nothing i can really do is there besides pay and get it fixed myself even if they were the ones to break it as i have no proof, please give me some advice - am I screwed?Did GoodYear break my strut on car?
You have a shot at being paid back for the repair costs. If you are very detailed in illustrating your story to the BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) you should win this one. I am 2 for 2 in winning with the help of the BAR and I would take take immediate action on this if I were you. The BAR is one agency who IS on your side and will set things right. The process should take a week or two with minimal effort on your part.Did GoodYear break my strut on car?
they are right struts do just break, and it will effect them once lifted on a lift, the suspension extends all the way, your just gonna have to fix them typically they are only like 20-50 bucks for the part plus laborDid GoodYear break my strut on car?

    Thermodynamics question?

A 50mm diameter strut that supports the heat exchanger in a nuclear power station is rigidly fixed at both ends. If the temperature increases from an initial temperature of 25?C to 300?C when the generator is at full power, calculate the force induced in the strut due to this temperature change. Assume the coefficient of linear expansion for the strut material is 14x10-6 / ?C and Young’s Modulus (E) is 210 GPa.

Would anyone know how to go about solving this?

    Thanks a lot :)..Thermodynamics question?
Young’s Modulus is an extension of Hooke's law and relates stress to strain in materials.

    Young’s Modulus E = Stress / Strain

Strain is the ratio of change of length / length and so is dimensionless, hence Young’s Modulus has units of stress, which is the same as pressure.

    Our strut is increased in temperature by 300 - 25 = 275°C

The coefficient of linear expansion for the strut material is 14x10^-6 / °C

    So the strut wants to extend by 275 x 14x10-6 = 3,850 x 10^-6 or 3.85 x 10^-3

But 3.85 x 10^-3 what? We have multiplied a coefficient with units of %26quot;per degree%26quot; by degrees, so we we have ended up with a number without any dimensions. And as we aren't told the length of the strut, we can't work out exactly how much it expands.

The key to this question is to realise that the coefficient of linear expansion is a ratio, like strain. So the strut wants to expand by 3.85 x 10^-3 metres per metre, or feet per foot if you prefer. It doesn't matter what the unit of measurement is, or the length of the strut, we have got the expansion ratio.

But the strut is rigidly fixed at both ends: it can't expand. So there must be a force at each end point retaining it at, or compressing it back to, its original length. So rather than expanding by 3.85 x 10-3 m/m, it is being compressed by the same ratio, which is strain.

    Young’s Modulus E = Stress / Strain

    Stress = E x Strain = 210 10^9 x 3.85 x 10^-3 = 808.5 x 10^6 Pascals or Newtons/m2

We are asked for the force induced in the strut due to the temperature change, so we need to turn this stress into the force on the strut.

    The area of the strut is π d2 / 4= π 502 / 4 = 1,963.5 mm2 or 1.963 x 10^-3 m2 (1mm2=10^-6m2)

    Newtons = Newtons/m2 x m2 = 808.5 x 10^6 x 1.963 x 10^-3 = 1,587 x 10^3 or 1.587 x 10^6 N

Answer: Force induced in the strut due to the temperature change = 1.587 x 10^6 N

How much to repair a broken strut?

I got an oil change at Good Year today and they told me I had a broken strut on the rear passenger side. I drive a 2001 Saturn L200. I had never heard any noises at all before the oil change but when I drove home there was a quite loud clanking noise, especially over bumps. I read somewhere you should get these fixed in pairs? I should get both rears done then? I was given a pricing estimate at Good Year and they told me $602. Does this sound accurate? Please help me, thanks. How much to repair a broken strut?
about 400 should do it/little steep at 600How much to repair a broken strut?
It depends, there's never a fixed price on this, i suggest you take it to various places even the place you bought it from if its a dealership and get estimates, compare the costs and choose which cost you less

a strut can cost a lot depending on the kind of car but price is less for just one.

the labor is the most expensive $250, $300 or over, since it takes a lotta energy and time to get to them, then there is taxing $79 or more. 600 sounds like a fair deal but take it to other places and compare your estimates before spending, if your not comfortable with what they told you.

Other people pay way more for invisible problems,

a dime sized scratch and a rice sized ding cost between 700 to $1200 to fix on a brand new beamer, of course, there's a huge difference but still yours can be a treat to you or cause bigger problems if it gets worst in the middle of the road, you might loose stability

  • 2005-2006 pontiac gto owners - i have some basic questions about the car...?

I am looking for a future car, and right now, my mind is set to get a 05-06 pontiac GTO. you know - the GTO with the LS2 rated at 400 hp/400 torque. however, i have a few questions to current/previous owners before i can really make a decision.

a few things i could not find online -

-what is the fuel tank capacity?

-what are your average miles per tank, and how conservatively do you drive?

-how many miles between oil changes?

-ive heard leaking struts a problem - how many people faced the problem?

    -any other major potential problems?

    -any minor problems?

-things you like/dislike about the car? (besides %26quot;its a fun car%26quot;)

-and lastly, would you recommend this car as a daily driver.

thanks for your feedback.2005-2006 pontiac gto owners - i have some basic questions about the car...?
I have seen a few strut problems with them at my dealership. It has an 18 gallon tank with a rating of 16 to 21 city /hwy. Most people change the oil every 3000 but you can do up to 5000 miles. One big issue we have had is parts and how long it takes to get them %26quot;weeks%26quot; so if your car is down it will take some time to get parts. I love the launch mode in the auto transmission. We sold a few of them and some people use them as daily drivers but most are used as a fun weekend car.2005-2006 pontiac gto owners - i have some basic questions about the car...?
It was tested by the japanese Drifter drivers who drifted it sideways around the track in 4 wheel drifts that is a poular sport in Japan.

They where very impressed as in standard form it beat their souped up car. (impressive in handling).

You should get about 34 mpg on the highway. Thats the 4.5Litre gallon, not US gallon, and driving like grandma, 60 mph2005-2006 pontiac gto owners - i have some basic questions about the car...?
hey there, i got a 06 A4 GTO and heres my info

-Tank holds 18 gallons of 91

-I get about 18-23 and i drive mainly on the freeway going 80-90 to school, on the A4 i average about 340 miles on a full tank. I drove it from Los Angeles to El Paso Texas and was getting 440 miles to a tank, and had to only fill up three times for one pass.

-Since it uses synthetic you should change it between 5000-6500 miles, i personally go 7000 cause i use royal purple as its the best.

-Never had a strut problem nor the people i know who have GTO's.

-No major problems, the car wasn't designed to fail you in the future. Anything that goes out is because of basic time wear or you abuse it too much.

-Minor none really, if any nothing the dealership can repair.

-There is nothing i dislike about this car, its unique looking, its got the power of a corvette (literally same engine and tranny), handles well cause its a GT chassy, the seats are very comfortable and you can fit someone who is 5'11 in the back seats. Its decently sporty inside with plenty of aftermarket and OEM parts from australia you can get for it, the rims are tight, and only vise is the stereo can be louder. so change out the amp

-yes i recommend this car for daily, i drive everywhere i go from work, to school, going out, its a solid car.

    -fuel capacity about 18 gal.

    -I average about 17 mpg....23 on a road trip.

-the oil life monitor system goes off between 3500 and 5500 miles(uses synthetic)

-no problems with struts or anything (28000 miles)

-only problem is keeping tread on the tires.

-I like it because its fast...it pulls hard at 60-70 for passing...

-the brakes are 'killer'...(%26quot;tight%26quot; for you younger kids)

-My kids don't like climbing into the back seat.....but its comfortable once your back there.

-not much trunk space....only good for haulin' a**

i bought it from a good dealership it's not like its from a buy here pay here.

also it had 70,00 mi. when i bought it.How do you determine that a car is a lemon?
the lemon law is that it has to have 5 MAJOR things go wrong with it within 1 year of purchase of a new car. You will have to have proof of this by dealer only repairs to your vehicle. The %26quot;small%26quot; repairs will be under new car warrantee. Since you bought a used car then you are screwed. The old saying of %26quot;caviot emptor%26quot; buyer beware. Just be sure to tell ALL of your friends and family not to buy anything from this dealer, as he probably knew the car was in this bad of condition. His mechanics will look over the vehicle when it was brought in then they will determine how much to fix to keep the car running long enough to resell it. If this a reputable dealer then he might refund some of your money since this car was in bad shape and he knew it.How do you determine that a car is a lemon?
Most of the time a lemon is determined from it having to go into the shop for the same problem 3 times within a certain amount of time, and the problem never being taken care of, but I think the lemon laws are different from state to state. How do you determine that a car is a lemon?
some you win some you lose. cut your losses and get rid of itHow do you determine that a car is a lemon?
It looks like no one did any maintenance on this car while they owned it. In other words, it is a well used car.

    The previous owners just put gas in it and that was it....and drive it into the ground. %26quot;Could have been a rental.%26quot;

The dealership ain't about to put money into it if they can sell it. Silicone and turtle wax is enough.

All the things you mentioned are items that wear and would have to be replaced if you owned the car from day one. Except in your case you would have done it piece by piece...over the long haul.

It is a matter of inspecting the car before you buy it - even from a dealer. Used is used=it is up to you to determine %26quot;how used is it%26quot;.

There is no major part here like engine, transmission or rear end.How do you determine that a car is a lemon?
As stated before the LEMON law only applies to newly purchased vehicles, or vehicles that were relatively newly purchased (ie very late model.)

Most of the items you've named are wear items (tires, brakes, struts, etc) though some cars wear faster than others. The window motors are notoriously failure prone in GM vehicles (my brother's Camaro spent 5 minutes rolling up the windows.) Its odd that the MAF went out that soon, but its not unheard of.

If its running fine now I'd say keep driving it, but if it starts to give you problems considering selling it a purchasing something else. Some cars are just money pits. Consider purchasing a Japanese car on your next go round, you will still need to fix stuff but they tend to break with a few more miles on them than the others do.

Any item for sale is only worth what somebody else is willing to pay for it. If it's priced right, it will sell fast. If it doesn't, you're asking too much. What is the average time it takes to sell a used car privately?
You answered your own question. If the price is right then it will go in a day. If the price is not good then you can hold it till the cows come home. If you only got 1 call, you need to check your price. What you want and what people are willing to pay... them be 2 different things.

Look up the going price at KBB.com and see what is the market value. Many people compare price there first. I know that if I see a car priced much higher than KBB.com I would not even bother calling.

The only cars that are the exception is the collectables. In these cases, it is whatever deal goes down - is the price.

BMW 320i Drivers Side Wheel migraton foward?

This has me stumped, my wife complained about a noise coming from the front end on her 81 BMW 320i. I drove it drove fine but occasionally when backing and turning I heard what sounded like a front tire rubbing against a fender. Odd as it is totally stock and hadn't been in an accident/curbhopped. Sure enough I see the begining of paint wear at the front of the fender wheel opening. I took wheel off inspected for bent parts or obvious damage, all looked good and seems tight.

then when I put it back down I notice that the wheel seems to be sitting foward in the well. I measure compared to the other side and sure enough it's about 1.25%26quot; forward. I tell wife to make an alignment appointment and just drive it to work and back till we get it in. I check the wheel today and it's almost touching the front of the wheel well opening. It moved another inch and some change. Is it a bad strut? ball joint? I've never encountered wheel migration like this, how bizarre.

Bushings....maybe but not likely....they wouldn't allow the wheel to move THAT much. I would look at the lower ball joint. It's probably ready to fall completely off....stop driving this car until you replace it. You will need to take off the wheel, brake, and remove the hub from the strut. Make sure you mark the strut bolts and strut so you don't have to realign when you reassemble. Good luck.BMW 320i Drivers Side Wheel migraton foward?

I'd go for a separating lower control arm bushing on this one too. Bad bushings can result in a suprising amount of movement in the control arm. This should be visible, especially when you compare the one side to the other.

    02 Hyundai Accent GL - YES, I need a new car :-)

    1. When I'm driving my car jerks forward every so often, in order to catch up to speed. The jerk does not occur all the time but when it does it's a 4-6 on a 1-10 scale in strength of the jerk %26amp; in terms of how it feels when inside the car. Only occurs when I'm driving...

We've already had the struts checked, the oil change done, transmission flush, and

    2. I finish my brakes faster on 1 side than the other. Other than having a heavy foot %26amp; bad habit of riding my brakes (according to my husband) :-) what can it be?

Months ago, As my husband changed my brakes after only having them for 2 months, 1 side was already metal to metal when the other was almost new! Of course, other than my husband being very upset with me about my riding my brakes.

We haven't been able to figure out what's wrong? Can you help?

hmmmm jerks? that sound like a fuel pump problem, your fuel filter may be clogged. get it checked out too.

    2 your rotors are warped.

Can anyone tell me how to change the fuel filter on a 94 volvo 850 2.3 turbo wagon?

Like where the filter is located I thought it was on the rear side of the strut tower mounted on the fraim rail in the fuel line but I don't see it.

    It's a '94 volvo wagon

ThanksCan anyone tell me how to change the fuel filter on a 94 volvo 850 2.3 turbo wagon?
The fuel filter is on the under the passenger side of the car, in front of the rear wheel.

It is bolted to the under body of the car with a large clamp.

There are two hoses that attach to it.

One 12mm bolt that holds the clamp.

To take each hose off the car, you will need a large screw driver to slide the slip collar back which will release the tension so the hose will slide off of the filter (very easy to do). But don't pry at the hose, pry at the slip collar.

To install, point the arrow of the filter to the front of the car and slide on the hoses.( with the hoses all the way on, tug on them to make sure they are on all the way).

Good luck and be care full, gas is flammable.

Is it difficult to change out a wheel bearing on a 91 Jetta?

I need to commandeer my dads 91 Jetta. Apparently, the left had side front wheel bearing went out and it needs to be replaced. Also, the struts are bad but I'm focusing on the wheel bearing for now.

My question is, how difficult is it to change the wheel bearing out? I am fairly proficient with cars.. Bascily, how long will it take?Is it difficult to change out a wheel bearing on a 91 Jetta?
here is a repair guide that tell how!

    http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairG

have fun!Is it difficult to change out a wheel bearing on a 91 Jetta?
The part that will be difficult for you is that you need to press the hub out of the bearing using a press. And press the old bearing out of the knuckle after that. A lot of times the hub is so badly pitted that if you install it into a new bearing there will still be excessive movement. Then your really screwed because you have to press it all back apart again, and this process ruins your new bearing you just installed. So if the hub looks hammered at all the first time, replace it, before installing it and finding out its bad too.

So basically you can remove the knuckle yourself, then take the assembly to a place that has a press, and when their done, put the knuckle back in yourself.

Also, you are doing half the work of replacing the struts, by taking out the knuckle. But then your going to need to find a place that has a spring compressor so you can swap strut assemblies. I would suggest replacing the bearing on the top of the strut assembly during that process. They go bad frequently, and yours will probably fall apart when you take the strut assembly apart. Is it difficult to change out a wheel bearing on a 91 Jetta?

Can anyone tell me how hard to change an auto transmission of a 2000 altima?

Before you answer that. I had a blown tire in the highway and state trooper had it towed to a lot. When i went to pick up my car, it would not move. Car started fine and engine running but not moving when I put in all gears. All I hear is engine reving when I apply gas. I notice a hole under the trans pan and trans fluid had all leaked out. Is my transmission blown?

Anyway, back to my original question. I am not a mechanic but mechanically incline and had changed out my timing belt, struts, shocks, brakes, alternator and starter on a car before.

I have a haynes manual but only use it for backup due to inaccuracy. I end up usually going online for better reference. Is there something I should look out for? Is there a special tool? Any advise or photos are appreciated...thanks!Can anyone tell me how hard to change an auto transmission of a 2000 altima?
Yes it is difficult. I too is a non-mechanic, but capable of doing this type of work. You are expecting to: Jack up the front end of car, remove exhaust line, take front wheels, wheel, hub, rotor, half shaft, then disconnect the shifter, support the engine using a hoist from top, slide transmission jack to support the tranny, remove transmission bolts and lower the transmission. installation is reverse.

Takes about 10 hours for DIY mechanic. No special tools are used, but helps to have air compressor and impact wrench for removing suspension components. Also need engine lifter and transmission jack.

Personally, I would try to fix that transmission leak, add more tranny fluid and see if I can make the car move. Can anyone tell me how hard to change an auto transmission of a 2000 altima?
take this to the local nissan dealer for an estimate, if it is too high for you consider getting a new car. you could try a couple of mechanic shops but usually these dudes try to rip you.Can anyone tell me how hard to change an auto transmission of a 2000 altima?

How important is strut replacement for my car? ?

Recently I have noticed a click click noise from the front of my car. The other day I took it for an oil change and the guy told me to have the passenger side shocks checked, something about replacing the struts..... I called a place and was told they charge like 150 each, 250 for labor and another 80 for wheel alignment. What happens if I don't do it right away? Are they very important and need immediate attention? Because my car makes the noise only when I drive it for more then an hour. Any suggestion? How important is strut replacement for my car? ?
The clicking noise is more likely a CV joint.

As for struts, the others seem to be right. They are very important, so drive conservatively till you get them done.

The price you were quoted seems high to me, so shop around before you commit to have them done.

I have seen struts done in two hours (all four), and I can find great shocks for 150 dollars a pair. Struts are one thing that I do not want original equipment for. I prefer Gabriel's or Monroe's. But a lot of store brands (NAPA and the like) are of the same quality as these.

Yes, get the shocks done and do not be surprised if you are told you need a CV axle when you do. Bargain with them before you say OK on this as a lot of the labor to replace the CV has been done at this point. How important is strut replacement for my car? ?
Quality shocks %26amp; struts ensure safe, comfortable driving by helping tires keep their grip. Most people believe that shocks and struts are only necessary for improving a vehicle檚 riding comfort. In fact, they do much more than that; their job is to help keep your tires firmly on the road.

Friction is your friend It檚 important to understand that a vehicle檚 ability to steer, brake and accelerate depends first and foremost on the adhesion, or friction, between the tires and the road. This adhesion is also referred to as the road holding capability of the vehicle, which is directly influenced by shock absorber or strut performanceHow important is strut replacement for my car? ?
thats very important. strut is basically the car that supports the car from falling flat onto the grownd. Think about it as the %26quot;legs%26quot; of the car. better get it fixedor you will literally lose a wheel on the highway.... and i am not kidding.

How hard is it to change a honda civic's struts?

front twoHow hard is it to change a honda civic%26039;s struts?
Not really at all just takes a bit of muscle and a nice bar that you can put a 3/4 socket on and maybe step on if needed, it's good if you've two people but it can be done with one person. If you had two bars like like that be good , sometimes I use a ratchet on the second bolt and jam it so I can turn the outside bolt.Just be sure to change the upper mount and bearing cases too or at least the bearing cases. Also you'll need a strut spring compressor bec new struts don't come with the springs usually. Some Honda parts suppliers sell a complete strut assembly that are rebuild or reconditioned very cheap.Look for the suppliers that only sell Honda parts they'll offer a good deal.

Once the the lower part of the strut bolts loose you'll find a set of nuts under the hood on the side walls that you must take off don't touch the middle big bolt at all.

Hope that helps and best of luck. By the way buy a Haynes service manual it will help you a lot.

You need to look in your local yellow pages. Once you locate some options there, you can call the phone numbers listed under their ads. 1984 Chevrolet Celebrity Changing Shocks?

Is there a step by step procedure somewhere on how to change the shocks and struts on a 1984 Celebrity. Also what pratfalls one may encounter. Thanks.1984 Chevrolet Celebrity Changing Shocks?
I have a complete manual for that car. I don't imagine you live in CT. I don't have the car anymore. It will be hard to change the struts without air tools and you need a spring compressor. The shocks are not as bad but you still have to cotend with 23 year old nuts and bolts. It will be a serious pain in the butt is all I can tell you. I'll go though the process if you are serious about doing it, but you tell me.1984 Chevrolet Celebrity Changing Shocks?
The back shocks are easy, nothing special required. The front struts are a different story, and require special tools and spring compressors to do it safety. Leave the fronts to a pro.1984 Chevrolet Celebrity Changing Shocks?
Shocks can be a little scary. but don't be afraid. The most important thing to remember about shock is they bit. If it is a McStren strut. the you will need a tool to compress the coil spring. however if it is what i think then no big deal. Most cars have a access hole in the wheel well under the hood. there are three screws you need to gentle take out. %26amp; one bolt under the lower control arm. then the shock should be able to come out from the access hole. To take the coil spring out you must !!!carefully!!! jack up the car on jack stands. Then jack up on the Lower Control Arm. compressing the coil spring as much as possible. Take the steering knuckle off. after loosening the inner bolts of the LCA After you done this, and the knuckle is off VERY GENTLY decompress the coil spring. And replace.

Now to replace the coil spring you must use cation. If it isn't done correctly then it could say hi the hard way. try to keep is strait, okay. I hope this helps you. i know it can be a challenge. !!!Oh. when tighting the castle nuts back don't loosen the nut to make the pin go in. Always tighten it. SAFETY FIRST

But before you try this get another opinion on it. It has been a long time since i done a job like this. I hope this helps you. Have Fun!1984 Chevrolet Celebrity Changing Shocks?
I'll list some tools you'll need before you start.

If you have an Auto Zone near by you can show a credit card and use the necessary tools while you do the job at no charge.

1.You'll need a 30mm deep well socket to remove the large nut at the end of both drive axles.

    2. Five ton three finger puller to push the CV shafts out of the wheel bearings.

3 . Pinion removal yoke to press out the lower ball joint.

    4. Strut spring compressers (2)

Remove both 30mm nuts with a1/2 wratchet and a piece of pipe for leverage. Loosen both front wheels, raise the car and support it on jackstands behind the front wheels on the sub frame. Remove both front brake calipers and support with wire or rope. Remove the rotors. Remove the nut at the bottom of the lower ball joint. Pop it out with the pitman removal tool. Press the axles out of the wheel bearings with the 5 ton puller. Remove the pinch bolts on the struts. The struts slide out of the spindles with the help of a large hammer on the top of the spindle. Remove the three nuts on top of the struts and they drop out.

The only difficult part of the job is removing the pinch bolts. They are often heavily rusted and corroded making them a pain to drive completely out. If you decide to re-use your coil springs you'll need to compress the old springs and transfer them to the new struts. Be sure the strut bearings are OK at the top of both struts.

The rear shocks are straight forward.

ok i,ll try to guide you through this. first you need a 3/8 drive ratchet and a 5/8 plug socket and maybe extension. pull 1 plug wire off at a time so you don,t get the firing order mixed up. take the plug out, gage the new 1 and put it in and tighten it but just snug it. now take the plug wire off and measure it with 1 of the new wires and install the new wire of the same length. just keep doing the same way with the rest of the plugs and wires but only 1 at a time. s-10 you say? ha, ha. i changed a set of plugs in 1 of those awhile back and it,s a bear to get to some of them. you might get to some of them by using a swivel on the socket.Changing spark plugs and wires on a 2003 chevrolet s10. how to do it my self?

keeping the wheels aligned be the roughestA 1995 buick lasaber changing front and rear struts?
McPherson struts have the shock absorber and spring mounted together in a single removable unit. To replace the shock absorber element, you have to compress the spring with a special tool. That's a hazardous operation which I've done myself, but don't recommend you try to do yourself. You'd have to rent or buy the spring compressor tool.

Unless your Buick chassis is bottoming out severely (weak springs) and continues to oscillate up and down (weak shocks), meaning the springs are so weak that the body and suspension are hitting each other, it may not be worth the cost to replace them on older vehicles unless the car is unsafe to drive. If the body is sagging at one wheel, then you could replace the spring on that wheel if necessary. Of course you could have a broken or leaking shock in which case you could replace just the front or rear pair of shocks.

Can a 15 year old work as a mechanic, or is there an older "legal" age?

I'm wondering this, because, guess what? Summer's here. I'd like something to do over the summer that will earn me money, instead of costing money. I'm going to be 16 at the end of summer (Sept. 2nd). Honestly, right now, a job is a job. I'd be lucky just to get any job at all. But I want to know if I could get this type of job, because it would be more money, it would probably be more fun, and i already know well enough what I'm doing ( well, enough for a simple job, like the kind at Big-O, or Jiffy-Lube, etc.). I know how to do the simple things.

    -change oil (duh).

    -rotate tires.

    -mount and dismount a tire.

-patch a tire (unfortunately not plug...)

-I have done drum brakes, but not too fond of them.

-disk brakes. those are so friggen easy, I think most mechanics could do them with their hands behind their backs ( slight exaggeration).

-I have changed a McPherson strut, but only once.

I'm sure there's more, but the point is, simple things along those lines. Is it legal for a 15 year old to get a job in this field, or should I just wait till I'm 16? I know that 15 (or even 14) year ODs can do most simple jobs, but not ones considered to be %26quot;hazardous%26quot;. Is this one considered to be %26quot;hazardous%26quot;? I don't see why it would be, if all of the safety rules are followed (as with everything, safety rules were the first thing I was taught). Can a 15 year old work as a mechanic, or is there an older %26quot;legal%26quot; age?
I doubt that you could qualify as a mechanic no matter how much experience you have. It depends on the state you live in, but most won't let you work in that type of environment. One way to find out is to call a lube place or some other place where you think you might want to work and ask them. You could also stop in and ask, but you might feel more comfortable calling and you can save yourself the trip.

I hear a clunky kind of rattle on the front passenger wheel of my 95 Accord, what is it?

When I go over even small bumps I hear like a rattling on the front passenger side of my car, but it's a deep clunky sounding rattle. My thinking is it may be because the strut is shot - would that be possible?

It's a 1995 Accord w/ 180K miles and I never got the struts replaced since i've owned it. Are they definitely shot? The car rides OK, it's not bouncy at all, it's very stiff, in fact if anything it's too stiff, but isn't that how it's supposed to be?

If I need new struts, how hard is that to do myself? I can buy a spring compressor for around 40 bucks and it seems easy enough to do, I looked at the manual and read some forums online, but I'm afraid of the %26quot;danger%26quot; that they say can happen, where if you change your own struts it could result in death. Is this true, even if I use a spring compressor? Seems it would result in death only if I didn't use a spring compressor.

Any advice?I hear a clunky kind of rattle on the front passenger wheel of my 95 Accord, what is it?
It is your strut and/or your strut mount. When you get a clunking in a strut the majority of the time it is your strut mount NOT your strut but with a car that has 180000 miles on it and if its never been changed most likely your strut is bad too.If you take it in to a shop make sure you have the strut mount changed also because if you leave the repair shop and your cars still clunking you will be very unhappy with yourself when you have to take it in again and pay the labor twice. As for doing it yourself i wouldn't recommend it just because of the simple fact that it is an older car and who knows what you might run into like rusted bolts that may be rusted so bad they need to be heated up or even worse if one broke off inside the car and if this happens then you have another expense.A tow bill.GOOD LUCK!I hear a clunky kind of rattle on the front passenger wheel of my 95 Accord, what is it?
sounds like the strut mount is bad, probably needs struts too.hope this helps.I hear a clunky kind of rattle on the front passenger wheel of my 95 Accord, what is it?
Before you go jumping to your death, check the wheel bearings %26amp; A-arms. Could be that simple. Struts take a REALLY long time to wear out, but if that is the case, a spring compressor will save you some money. It's not as dangerous as you may be thinking, just follow the directions %26amp; use your common sense. Good luck!I hear a clunky kind of rattle on the front passenger wheel of my 95 Accord, what is it?
I think the shock absorber/strut malfunction diagnosis is incorrect at only 180,000 miles. Modern cars like a 1995 Accord should go much much further than this before needing strut replacement. The exception is if you have been in some kind of collision accident and this was overlooked in the body repair. Insurance companies like to ignore the mechanical parts of car damage if they can get away with it. I think you need to have your brakes looked at and have a mechanic check out the rest of the underside for improperly torqued bolts or bolts that have been tightened without their proper washers especially if there has been some accident. It will be worth it because this is a good car that has 300,000 miles to go if the oil changes are happening regularly. I am voting on the brakes or some stones due to dirt.I hear a clunky kind of rattle on the front passenger wheel of my 95 Accord, what is it?
you need to let someone do it that knows how to you can kill your self even if you have a spring compressor and you don't now how to use it plus when its done you will need a alignment better to let a shop do it because they will guaranty it plus they will let you know if anything else is wrong. most shops charge 20.00 to 40.00dollars for front end check and will give you a quote .I hear a clunky kind of rattle on the front passenger wheel of my 95 Accord, what is it?
sounds like stabilizer links to me. pull up and down on the bar where they mount; if there's any play, they're bad. at 180k, w/ oe struts, replacing them is good pm. check for availibility of quick struts; these are the strut, spring, and mount all in one and assembled. control arm bushings will make noise when they go bad, too.I hear a clunky kind of rattle on the front passenger wheel of my 95 Accord, what is it?
might be struts but first check the ball joints and sway bar links

I got a '95 Saturn SL2. 130,000 miles. Still runs great. How often do you need to change your shocks/struts? If your car's really bouncy, does that mean it's time? And how much is a good price for new shocks/struts?Cost for shocks/struts on my car?
um no you would only need a new strut if you hear knocking and a new one would be about $100 without labour, i would suggest buying a used one for about $20 tho. and also a strut is easy to do on your own its only about 5 or 6 bolts.Cost for shocks/struts on my car?
Get a friend to drive your car around you and you can watch how much it bounces. I was shocked to see mine looked like it nosedived. Over time, you get used to %26quot;bounciness%26quot; and don't notice. A backyard mechanic from CList quoted me $400 Canadian, parts %26amp; labor. Remanufactured parts, which is fine.

Cost for shocks/struts on my car?
This really is a matter of safety. Worn struts or shocks will affect not only the handling of your car but also increases your braking distance. Shocks and struts typically last anywhere from 60000 to 100000 miles. At 130000 , it is probably time to have them changed. Bounciness is a very good indicator of worn struts. If you went to a part store to buy them they would cost you between 50 and 80, from the mechanic, probably about 100 ( the mechanic has to eat too)Cost for shocks/struts on my car?
Yes if your car seems to bounce a lot it is probably time for new struts. It is one of the most over looked maintenance items...I heard a stat that like 80% of cars go to the junk yard with Original shocks and struts. The purpose of the strut and shock is to keep the vehicle from bouncing and to keep the tire on the ground, it improves braking distances because of this. Your car has struts on all four corners which makes the rear a little more pricey to replace VS if it had shocks. The front strut labor is 2 hours and the rear is 2.5 hours roughly....labor guides differ somewhat and some shops charge to disassemble the strut once its out (.3 per strut at most places .3 x 4 = 1.2).....so $100 an hour x 5.7hours = $570 in labor. Struts usually are not too expensive......I would guess high at maybe $150 per strut (probably less, but could be more) $ 150 x 4 struts = $600 in parts. Plus an alignment should be done also (probably $69) Labor $570 + Parts $600 + alignment $69 = $1240.....that estimate is probably high but strut replacement is exspensive and thats why they do not get done on a lot of cars. Good luck!Cost for shocks/struts on my car?

  • My car drives like my foot is on break and accelerator at same time?

Why? It drives like the break pads are touching the rotors but my foot is not on break. It started that this evening. The hand break is pulled down and everything seem fine. But just that feeling like I'm driving with just the rims and no tires. Any help why this maybe happening?

Also I need to know how much it costs to change all four shock absorbers cause it's currently bumpy when I hit small potholes that other cars will just pass with comfort. Does the shocks and struts need change or there is something that can be done about it. Thanks. I'm pretty new with cars. It a 1995 Dodge Avenger ES. I'm thinking of Cancelling my insurance for the next 3months so I can fix everything needed to be fixed on it. Thanks for the helpMy car drives like my foot is on break and accelerator at same time?
Might be cheaper to purchase a nother vehicle theses repairs are quite pricy. check it out, before you spend a lot on the dodge. My car drives like my foot is on break and accelerator at same time?
It sounds like this could be one or more things..

You may have a seized caliper. Does one or more of your wheels have much more brake dust than the others?

You could have a collapsed flex line. Again, look for excessive break dust.

You could have pads worn down to the metal, although this would not attribute to a drag from the breaking system, simply the grind when applying the brakes, therefore I feel it is unlikely.

If your e-brake system is a shoe style system, it could possibly be hanging. Do you decelerate more quickly than normal? If you're driving and let your foot off of the gas and coast, does your speed drop abnormally quickly? If so, you can assume it could be something hanging up. If not, the problem could be somewhere else and we can go from there.

    To do all four shocks:

A shop is going to charge you quite a bit for labour, and parts. Call your local jobber, give them your cars details (Year and model, engine) and get a price on four new shocks/struts. Then, you have the choice of paying someone to do it, or supplying parts to the shop and simply pay labour.

Hope this helps.. If I feel I have missed something I'll add it later. My car drives like my foot is on break and accelerator at same time?
Changing the shocks is an easy fix that shouldn't cost much. The other problem is likely your fuel filter. You give it gas, but it doesn't get it. Sounds clogged to me. One other thing is, it's being choked by a dirty air filter. My car drives like my foot is on break and accelerator at same time?
Try putting the selector in neutral. Then see if the car can be rocked back and forth at least a little to find if something is bound up preventing it from rolling smoothly. My car drives like my foot is on break and accelerator at same time?
If it's been as cold where your at as it is here, your brakes could be frozen !

    1996 Chevy Cavalier steering problems....?

My 1996 CHevy Cavalier steering wheel is not at the normal position when I am steering in a straight line. when turning corners i have to oversteer drastically turning the wheel furhter than normal. The steering wheel seems loose, not as tight as it should be. The back passenger side of my car seems to feel wobbly even when driving on smooth paved roads. I recently got new struts, oil change, brand new tires and an alignment ( this obviously did not help the problem). It does not make any unusual noises either. One mechanic said that a caster was bent. Another said it was the rack and pinion, another said that nothing at all was wrong. Three different answers and more money spent just trying to figure this problem out........please help. Any answers are greatly appreciated. Also, about how much would it cost to have this problem fixed?1996 Chevy Cavalier steering problems....?
Not the tie rod. Could be the rack or the pinion. Question: Were the tires abnormally worn on the insides? If so, could signal the idler or Pittman arms. Only a mechanic will be able to correctly diagnose this problem by actually looking at the front end suspension.1996 Chevy Cavalier steering problems....?
Check the power steering rack mounting bolts if the bolts are loose the rack could shift back and forth causing the steering problems. Worn ball joints and tie rod ends could also cause the front end problems. Broken rubber bushings bushings could cause problems on both ends. The rear could also be a bad wheel bearing.1996 Chevy Cavalier steering problems....?
well if you steering wheel is not in the normal position when in a strait line i believe that it could be a %26quot;tie rod%26quot; or most likely the rack and pinion is loose... i had the same problem and i think it was my rack and pinion i hit a hard bump or something like that and it knocked a bolt loose but yea be careful cause your steering wheel could just stop working and wont turn anymore so i hope i helped1996 Chevy Cavalier steering problems....?
you need to take it to someone who does strictly front end work and alignments and have them check it,then they can tell you for sure what it needs, take it to a shop that can tell you, most shops now don't know how to properly check the front end on a front wheel drive car,and don't pay for them to check it,this should be done as a courtesy ,most shops now don't charge to check one, just to repair it,you could have some badly worn parts int it causing it to drive like this, good luck with it.

Thats a job for a mechanic shop! You'll end up wearing a coil spring if you try to do it yerself! Those coil springs are under high compression, and will surely be nothing but trouble, unless you have the proper tools and know-how to do the job!How to change coil springs on 2002 Grand Prix?
My 14 year old son (at the time) tried to change his coil springs, and found out, after many hours of getting out of the %26quot;fix%26quot; he found himself in, that what i had told him was true---Don't try it!--you'll get in big trouble, and have many problems! And, he did! He finally solved his problem.
