Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?

Hi there. I live in Connecticut, am still driving a 98 Cavalier (yes, the luxury, I know) and would love to continue doing so for as long as possible; it's a great little car; no frills, reliable, long paid off, but needs some routine care due to its age.

I'm at 125K miles, and obviously need to replace the rear struts. Last time I had it in for an oil change my mechanic told me %26quot;it's time%26quot;. I'm sure all four could use replacing, but the rear ones are in the most critical shape.

Just wondering if anyone has any idea how much this is going to cost me? I could just ask my mechanic, and of course he'll give me an estimate before he does any work. I'm just curious.

Thanks!Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
Gabirel Ultras run $44 a piece for the rear from Autozone. The fronts run the same. They are generally better than OEM with a lifetime warranty. I'd suggest you do all four at the same time if at all possible, as you'll need an alignment as well, and all four likely need to be replaced. There are safety and tire wear issues to be considered here, and you should have your entire suspension carefully inspected.

I suggest you call your local Autozone and ask them who they might recommend in your area that uses their parts, and you might not get killed too badly on the repair. I recently did this for my Mom's Ford Contour (same repair - 4 struts), saved many hundreds of $$$, and found a decent/close local mechanic in the process. Autozone also has a shop locator service as part of their Web site and you can start there if you prefer.

The MSRP on one rear strut for a 98 Cavalier from Chevrolet is $159. Add in labor and service costs, and the car isn't worth much more to that same dealer. They would love to have your money, however.

Good luck.Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
Well it is going to vary on the strut you chose to put in. If you put in factory OEM parts, which I suggest on this car, you are looking at about $425 for the strut and install. The reason I suggest OEM is look how far they have made it now. Aftermarket parts may be cheaper but you get what you pay for on this car.Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
i got an estanite of 600 to 800 for all four and sold the car rather than put that much $ into it.Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
well id say 60 per strut at 2 labor hrs at 65 an hr is 250. Id ask if he could do all around for 350.Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?

The struts themselves are $150....Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
Out here in the west, It costs on average $75.00 per corner. But be advised that whether you change 1 or all 4 you will have to have a new alignment done. This is due to your car being 4 wheel alineable. About another $50.Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
Probably over 200 plus parts.Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
You should be looking at about $400 for everything.

btw, if he says the struts are $60, tell him you want better ones.

If you replace them with quality parts, you'll never have to buy struts again for this car. They will outlast the car.

Note: the labor cost is the same whether you put on cheap parts or quality parts.Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
If you're going to replace the struts why don't you just go ahead and get a lowering kit and slam that ride! Seriously, pimp that car out!Replacing rear struts on 98 Chevy Cavalier; cost estimate?
