you can do it yourself. How difficult to change struts on %26039;97 neon? am backyard mechanical aptitude level, but have lift access.?
It's not too hard to do most of it but compressing the spring can be really dangerous. You can simply unbolt the strut assembly, take it to a parts store that will switch the springs then bolt them back in.In the process, the wheel camber will need to be reset, you can do that by placing a level against the tire while it is sitting on the ground. How difficult to change struts on %26039;97 neon? am backyard mechanical aptitude level, but have lift access.?
You will need a strut compressor to get the springs off, first remove the outside bolts of the top of the strut - Make sure you don't take off the nut in the middle - That's what holds the spring in place on the strut. Mark the bolt heads at the bottom of the strut to a reference point on the car - a lot of cars have bolts that adjust the camber/caster. Then remove strut, secure it in a vice gently, use spring compressor to compress spring, then remove nut at top after your Positive there is no pressure at the top(you should be able to move spring freely) Then reverse procedure. This is a general guide for strut replacement.
